Here's what's going on in the Sea Rocket world...
Our one year anniversary is on June 1st and we've decided to invite our Linkery friends back to their old digs (i.e., Sea Rocket) for a party starting around 7pm. Here are the details of The Linkery Nostalgia / 1 Year Anniversary Party. Come for a special paella with Linkery pastured pork sausage, clams, mussels, mahi, and calamari that night only.
We've started a $2 tapas menu. It's basically a few bites of different dishes on our menu, so it's a great way to sample our different recipes at a great price. Lots of people have been coming in for this, so you might like it too.
You'll find Santa Barbara olives on the tapas menu. Come give them a try after watching this video we made about their organic farm. His farm is where commercial olive farming started on the west coast and he has some fascinating insights to share about how they run an organic farm.
One of the potential names for Sea Rocket before we opened was "Open Source", so in the spirit of super-duper transparency, we've published a spreadsheet of who we buy our food from and how much money we've spent with each source. We strive to get local, regional, and farm direct foods. Getting 100% super cool food like this is not possible, but we aim to continually increase the amount of food we do get from these kinds of sources. And we aim to be completely open about our food sources. We do not want to be a restaurant that talks about "local" and is really just featuring a couple of local items on the menu. So take a look at the spreadsheet and updated food map and see for yourself. We'll update this spreadsheet and post it to a new entry on our blog occasionally so you can see what kind of progress we're making.
One place we get some of our food is Sage Mountain Farm which was recently featured along with Seeds of Change in a local news story with great video.
In our ongoing quest to reach environmental nirvana, we're now using Bio Bags, aka compostable corn trash bags. We're also collectively driving only about 20 miles per day to get to the restaurant because most of us walk, bike, or live very close by. And if you're able to get here by bike, we'll give you a biker's discount.
There's a new website up and running called InFishWeTrust that compiles information from different sources to help people make sustainable seafood choices specific to San Diego. Check it out!
Upcoming Events
You can find all this on our events calendar, but for your convenience, here are some upcoming events we'll be hosting, in chronological order...
Our councilman, Todd Gloria, will be at the restaurant from 10:00-11:30am on Saturday, May 23rd for a meet and greet. Come join us and make your voice heard.
Our Belgian Inspired Beer Dinner in April was such a success that we've decided to do it again on May 27th.
On Thursday June 4th, we're hosting a Super Food Drive website launch party.
World Oceans Day is coming up on June 8th! We'll be showing the documentary A Sea Change to help raise awareness of increasing ocean acidification. Check out one of our public screenings and take action to keep fish on your plate for years to come.
On June 18th, we'll be showing Science Is Fiction: 23 Films by Jean Painlevé. This is part of our ongoing Citizen Video film series and comes with a $20 prix fixe dinner including an appetizer, entree, and drink.
A note about a past event: Our menu is full of healthy foods (even if you wouldn't know it because they taste so good), and on May 19th, we hosted a dinner with a group called Skinny Gene that promotes awareness of type 2 diabetes which can be controlled through diet. I mention this because Skinny Gene plans on doing repeated dinners at Sea Rocket Bistro and in general tries to encourage their members to always make good choices when eating out.
Thanks for being part of the Sea Rocket family, and we look forward to seeing you again soon at the bistro!
