Slaughterhouse None

I got an email from Candice over at Slow Food Urban San Diego about a group of ranchers getting together to discuss putting a USDA approved slaughterhouse in San Diego. One of the main challenges we have in getting reasonably priced local meat at Sea Rocket is having to drive the animals up to L.A. to have them killed.
The meeting was vastly entertaining given the personalities involved. There was the meat guy who loves corn fed beef and wants to take avantage of the "local trend", the small farmer who really cares about what he's doing in terms of its impact on the world, the confused older guy who questions everything, and the regular ranchers trying to make a living. Unfortunately, the entertainment value probably wasn't helpful in helping the group achieve their goal. There are some truly dedicated and motivated people in the group, and I look forward to seeing if they can pull this off and make it happen. But in the meantime, we made some good contacts, so you may see some new local grass fed meat on the menu soon.
