San Diego Beer Week is quickly approaching, and, like last year, we’re planning a slew of crafty events. Here is our listing for you, with links to more detail wherever it’s available. As with most bars and restaurants around San Diego, we are still putting the finishing touches on some of them, coordinating with brewers, and working to select a fantastic lineup for you!
Thursday, November 3rd – BYOHB Pre-Beer Week Kickoff
(not technically DURING beer week, but we like to jump the gun sometimes)
There’s nothing better than a good craft beer…unless you brewed it yourself! Come into the Rocket for a casual pre-beer week kickoff and try a few of the 4 home brews created by local home brewing enthusiast Diolinda Monteiro who has graciously offered to share them with us, alongside some special menu pairings from Chef Chad. We encourage everyone to bring some of their own home brews to share as well- swap your brewing stories and share some tips while looking forward to all the week has to offer.
Friday, November 4th - “Beer Week Takes Flight” with Airdale Brewing!
Enjoy a 3-Beer Flight from Airdale Brewing for just $10, and meet the brewer between 5pm-8pm. All of their beers have aeronautic-inspired names and propeller-shaped tap handles due to the background of owner and naval veteran Tony Clarke. We’ll have the Altitude Pale Ale, Afterburner Amber Ale, and Homecoming Holiday Spiced Porter. We’ll also be featuring these beers the following week in our “Salute the Troops” Veteran’s Day Prix Fixe Menu, but you can try them more casually this first Friday as well. Take Flight into Beer Week with us!
Saturday, November 5th – Girly Beer Club Cooking Class with Chef Jenn Felmley – CANCELED
Our resident Guest Chef (wait, I think that’s an oxymoron) Jenn Felmley will be hosting a daytime pop-up, hands-on cooking class from 11:30am-3pm November 4th for the Girly Beer Club, but it is also open to anyone else who might like to attend. If you’re interested in learning more, please e-mail her directly at jlfelm@yahoo.com. She’ll be teaching recipes for Beer Battered Fish Tacos, Drunken Pinto Beans, and some Dark Beer Cupcakes. Join the fun, and enjoy the results of your labor with the rest of the class!
Saturday, November 5th – Vegan Beer Dinner with Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales
Our friends Kory and Derek from LOVELIKEBEER, along with Jeff from San Diego Beer Blog, approached us about hosting a beer dinner featuring Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales. While this brewer is located in Michigan and therefore not local, they do make incredibly interesting small-batch brews and are rarely ever found on draft here in San Diego, so we just couldn’t pass up the opportunity (and the culinary challenge) to create a vegan dinner to match. Tickets are on sale now, and the menu has been posted, so check out the link to our blog and get your seats before this one-night only event fills up!
Sunday, November 6th – Get Stupid with Coronado Specialty Brews
Meet the brewer and enjoy a tasting flight including Orange Avenue Witt ON CASK with habanero and cilantro, Hoppy Daze IPA, and Stupid Stout.
Monday, November 7th – Grass Fed Sliders & Beer
Our usual $10 Monday Night Grass Fed Burger promotion will be hopped up this week, when we’ll feature three different styles of Grass Fed Burger Sliders, paired with three different 6-ounce tasters of draft beers to match. $25 will buy you this fantastically flavorful Sliders & Beer Pairing.
Tuesday, November 8th – Oysters & Beer (what else on a Tuesday?!)
$1 Oyster Tuesdays continue, with the added bonus of some beer-influenced oyster specials. Chef Chad will grill ‘em, fry ‘em, smoke ‘em, marinade ‘em, pate ‘em (no, that’s not a real verb) and anything else he can think of, inspired by a lineup of local craft beers that will make 30th Street proud.
Wednesday, November 9th - “The Flavors of Yeast” with White Labs
Water, barley, hops…if you’re a beer enthusiast, you’re probably intimately familiar with all of these things. But what about yeast? Is it an overlooked element in the brewing process? How do you know which of dozens of yeasts to buy when you’re making a batch? Do you know what characteristics the myriad of varietals will yield? Come find out everything you ever wanted to know about yeast direct from the source itself- White Labs Yeast & Fermentation. $20 at the door will include beer-inspired hors d’oeuvres throughout the demonstration, and we’ll have 4 different beers for you to sample side-by-side! Check back for our more detailed blog soon.
Thursday, November 10th – “Meet Your Fishermen” Mixer & Dinner
Not a SDBW-related event, but an awesome opportunity nonetheless, we’ll be hosing 22 fishermen from all parts of the nation who are in town for some Community Fisheries Network meetings and inviting anyone who’s interested to come meet these hardworking folks who fish food for us all over the country. Chef Chad will be creating a unique menu to highlight their catch, along with Cohn Restaurant Group Guest Chef Katherine Humphus of Bo Beau. Just follow the link above for more detailed information…
Friday, November 11th – Sunday, November 13th – “Salute the Troops” Veteran’s Day Beer Week Prix Fixe
Enjoy a 3-course prix fixe menu for $40 including 6-ounce tasters of beer with each. Chef Chad will be donning his old navy chef coat (if he still fits into it) and cooking up a modern take on naval cuisine. He’ll have some current naval chefs as his kitchen crew for the night, and additional volunteer seamen will likely be serving food and bussing tables in uniform! $5 from every Prix Fixe meal purchased will be donated to Team Rubicon, so come salute our troops while also supporting great local food and craft beer.
